Leadership and Management Training

The Leadership and Management Training package is conducted as a joint venture with our partners, Benchmark Training Ltd. Benchmark Training Ltd is an established training organisation that provides high quality, geographically dispersed training to 10,000 students a year in the Railway, Defence and Security sectors.

The aim of Leadership and Management Training is to encourage managers to learn and develop leadership skills through a structured series of theory and practical lessons, learning how to think not what to think.

The training package is bespoke and tailored to a client's needs. However, an example Leadership and Management Training package could be broken down as follows:

  • 1 day of Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to inform training requirements and allow bespoke targeting of effort
  • 2-3 days of theory based training, conducted either on or off site
  • 1½ days of residential theory and practical training conducted at the Benchmark Leadership Centre based at the Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire

The training, which can be conducted on consecutive days as a package or broken down over a number of weeks, includes the following key aspects:

  • Theory

    Explain the underpinnings of leadership, namely:

    • Command and authority
    • Example
    • Responsibility
  • The Mechanics of Leadership
    • Assessment and Analysis
      • How to quickly work out what the problem is and what can be done
    • Decision Making
      • How to decide what should be done
      • How to plan how to do it
      • How to identify the factors critical for success
    • Planning
      • Introduce the planning process
      • How and why it is applicable at every level in every scenario
    • Delegation
      • How to deliver effective briefings and give instructions
      • How to communicate effectively, including verbal, written and electronic communication
    • Execution
      • How to guide and teach
      • How to supervise
      • Managing 360° feedback correctly
      • How and why you must check, adjust and check again
    • Completion
      • How to check and audit performance and outcome
      • The importance and practice of 'Lessons Learned'
      • How to effectively revise a plan
      • How to effectively amend procedures
  • Routine Management

    A series of presentations and discussions on how to get the best out of teams on a day to day basis. Subject matter could include:

    • Getting to know your team
    • Working together
    • Common and shared values
    • Pitfalls and obstacles
    • Adopting a working routine
    • Administration
    • Communication
    • Conflict resolution
    • Assessments and appraisals
    • Personal development and training
    • Skills and attributes
    • Safety
    • Legislation - update on relevant changes
    • Responsibilities
  • Practical lessons and challenges

    Delegates will complete a number of specifically designed tasks, both as individuals and groups, to challenge and examine the lessons identified during the training. These will include the leaderless group tasks, command tasks and incident management tasks ranging from everyday scenarios to catastrophe response. This training will be conducted at the Benchmark Leadership Centre.
